Earth Day

Happy Earth Day! A good website to check out is earthday.net. But remember, Earth Day is Every Day!

How to Celebrate Earth Day
The celebration of Earth Day on April 22nd began in the United States in 1970 and was the brainchild of Senator Gaylord Nelson, who had long pondered about finding a way to “put the environment into the political ‘limelight’ once and for all”.
1. Plant Trees
2. Make nature crafts
3. Reduse, reuse, recycle
4. Recycle or donate used items (toys, books, etc)
5. Pick up litter
6. Attend an Earth Day Fair
7. Cook an organic Earth Day meal
8. Listen to “Earth” or nature songs.
9. Engage in conversations about environmental concerns.
10. Teach others about the environment

Polar bears need help!

Hello! I have an urgent action alert from the NRDC about polar bears in the Arctic. Tell the Bush Administration to protect polar bears and their critical habitat. Ice is melting at a faster rate each spring, causing the bears to become separated from the mainland by melting ice and not being able to catch their prey, since they rely on ice holes to catch seals. Please send this message and thank you!

Sad news

This is really sad and depressing news. Reports of Congolese Rebels eating Mountain gorillas. This article also contains a graphic image that may disturb some.

Also more bad news, 30% of Fish Species in China’s Yellow River are Extinct. Due to overfishing and pollution among others.

Bad news for orangs

This is not good news for orangutans. Intentional forest fires in Indonesia killed up to a thousand orangutans this year. If this continues, they may be extinct within the decade.

Earth Day

April 22 is Earth Day. Take a moment of your time to pay tribute to Mother Earth! Two big issues currently facing our planet are global warming and oil use. There are several online actions you can take.

  • Tell your Representative to oppose oil development in the Artic Refuge. Battle recently resumed as the Senate passed a budget resolution on March 16 that would lead to industrialization in the Artic refuge.
  • Sign a pledge to move America beyond oil.
  • Tell Your Senators to Support a Tough Global Warming Bill!
  • Join the Sop Global Warming Virtual MarchAlso, lots of simple things can make a big difference! Always recycle, pick up litter, conserve energy, etc. And enjoy nature! Go outside, take pictures, go on a nature hike. Happy Earth Day!

Hurricane

As everyone is aware, there was the horrible and destructive hurricane that ravaged the gulf coast. As important it is to help everyone affected, it is easy to overlook the many pets and animals that are also victims of this disaster. Here are some links to help out:

Tsunami

The Asian Tsunamis that occurred have had devastating effects on the people and land. We should also think about the animals too though. Orangutans only live on Borneo and Sumatra, and Sumatra was the worst hit. Orangutans are extremely endangered, and think about what the tsunamis could have done to their populations. More people died on Sumatra than there are orangutans. Let’s just hope orangutans aren’t extinct now. However, I did read this article about how animals may have sensed the tsunami before it came. Check it out.
